At Hamlet Therapy, we understand the unique challenges faced by adolescents and their families. That's why we're excited to offer our new Multi-Family Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Group, a weekly, 90 minute skills group designed specifically for adolescents and their parents to attend together.
This program provides a supportive environment where together, families can learn and practice essential DBT skills. Our intensively trained DBT therapists will guide you through techniques to improve your families skills in several areas:
Mindfulness: Learn strategies to practice self-awareness and the ability to stay focused in the present moment. Learn to expand your ability to recognize alternative points of view and manage emotional situations nonjudgmentally
Distress tolerance: Learn strategies to tolerate difficult emotions and strong impulses without responding to crises by worsening problems
Emotion Regulation: Learn strategies to better understand your emotions and increase your ability to prompt pleasant emotions and reduce the intensity of unwanted emotions
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Learn strategies to build, strengthen and maintain positive relationships with yourself and others
Walking the Middle Path: Learn strategies to get unstuck from family conflicts, such as problem-solving skills, validation and strategies to effectively manage differences of opinion with family members

Multi-Family Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
At Hamlet Therapy, we currently use RO DBT to treat clients who struggle with disorders of overcontrol. Disorders that fall into the category of overcontrol include anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive personality, avoidant personality, dependent personality, autism spectrum disorders, and treatment resistant anxiety or depression. Typical RO DBT treatment is comprised of both individual therapy and skills class, in which over controlled (OC) individuals learn together in a supportive environment.
In skills class, we teach OC copers:
Mindfulness, to increase awareness of thoughts, feelings, body sensations with the goal of increasing openness, learning, and adopting new ways of approaching stressors
The science behind emotions
How to approach envy, bitterness, resentment, and shame skillfully
How to engage in novel behavior
How to forgive and let go of grudges
How to be flexible and to participate without planning
How to accept feedback
How to signal genuineness and vulnerability to others in an effort to increase connection socially
Skills class ranges from 20-25 weeks for one cycle and occurs weekly for 90 minutes. Patients may choose to repeat a cycle to deepen their skills proficiency. Skills class is generally available for teens and young adults and is currently taught in a hybrid in-person/virtual model.
